I’ve been to thinking about ways I want to expand Diversecreatures and still make it accessible to readers out there. In order to do that, I had to think about what really interests me outside of what I’ve been posting on here for the past 10 months. After all, this is a space that I want to be all over the place or well, DIVERSE 😉! So each month, I hope to highlight different movies, music and TV shows as well as some books that I feel people should be checking out and taking some time with. I’m calling it “D’s Netflix & Chill/Listen/Watch Picks”.
It’s important to note Netflix won’t always be included on my lists-I just couldn’t think of a better title. So lets dive in!
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (PARAMOUNT)
I started out as a youngster as a Sega guy. We had a Genesis and Sonic was one of the first games I vividly remember playing. So, when I heard a movie was in the works, I was very excited, to say the least! And the movie did not disappoint! Even tho the film is geared for younger audiences, as a 32 year old man I found it to be rooted in adult themes. Friendship, loneliness, the struggle to be yourself are lessons and things anybody at any age can relate to. Ben Schwartz (voice of Sonic) did a great job and its everything I wanted out of the character. Jim Carrey also played a great role as Dr. Robotnik as an offbeat, mad scientist/smartass. He definitely had me laughing. Vintage 90’s Jim Carrey on full effect! I definitely recommend it if you’re a fan of the game..or not!
THE OUTSIDER (HBO) Sunday 9 PM
Where do I begin with HBO’s new series “The Outsider”? The Outsider is an American horror crime drama miniseries that’s based off of Stephen King’s best-selling novel for one. Its dark, twisted and the acting is some of the best I’ve seen on a show (or anywhere really) for awhile. There’s also a supernatural element that really makes the show kick into full gear and its made me keep coming back for more. The show is starts off in a small town being thrown into a murder investigation. A young boy has been taken and the authorities believe the kid’s baseball coach is behind it-yet the coach is seen at a different place and time than when the abduction has taken place. Things get even weirder (and darker) here on out. If you like dark, atmospheric suspenseful drama, The Outsider is for you!
Best Coast “Always Tomorrow” (Concord Records)
I’m always looking for new music and I have to say, Best Coast’s new album “Always Tomorrow” is one of my favorites of 2020 thus far. Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno always bring the 1-2 punch belting out angsty, surf-rock, soaring anthems and this album expands on their repertoire. Newly sober, Bethany’s songs touch on issues she might have had in the past yet the songs are sprinkled with upbeat and cheery vibes. “Everything Has Changed” is one of those singles that I gravitated to instantly. I absolutely loved it and it set the tone for the rest of the album for me. If you like guitar pop or just GOOD MUSIC in general definitely hit it up and soak up the good vibes!
